Birthday Contemplations, Two Months Later

Prologue

Technically I am writing this post on my birthday (19th of December), but as young writer, I find the act of sharing the thought of your past self with your current one exciting, to say at least.

So here we go.

I

Birthdays are funny thing. Suddenly all the people in your life are telling you how much they love and appreciate you, and how good you are doing.

Don’t get me wrong, I like my birthday. In the past years more than ever, thanks to my wonderful husband, who seems had made his lifes’ mission to outdo himself every year.

The first thing my 26th birthday got me thinking about was do we need a special occasion to share our feelings with the people we love? I would gladly receive this kind of love and appreciation on daily basis. But deeper reflection leads to the thought if we have it, will we ever appreciate it. Maybe some things are better when they are not consumed in excessive way.
(just FYI, chocolate is not one of them!)

II

Other thoughts that are invading my peaceful work day are of my past birthday celebrations. Is it only me, or you also feel like giving up the social pressure of celebrate your birthday with drinks, out having fun and sharing everything on SM is less and less seductive, while pizza and board games in the privacy of your home with a handful of people you can actually tolerate without the need of alcohol, sound like the best plan ever.

(sometimes I wonder if I am turning 26 or 62…My mom seems to think I am ‘an old soul’. Or as we know, the polite way of saying you are a grandma at heart.)

III

And finally, one thing I realised this year - if you don’t stand up for something, you stand up for nothing. Controversy to popular opinion, it’s okay to make some noise, especially if you are a woman. It’s okay to make people feel uncomfortable with your words and your truth. That’s what I am taking from my 25th year on this world, and bringing fiercely into my next year, and hopefully all the rest of them.

Salute to that!

P.S: What is your birthday contemplation?
