One Step at a Time: How I Found Peace & Calmness
For me, discovering peace and calmness has always resonated with having clarity in my life.
Knowing what I want, understanding my personal and professional priorities, and carving out a clear path forward provides a sense of groundedness that's hard to put into words. It’s like having a serene lake amidst a bustling city within me, where I can retreat to be my best self—confident and calm, grounded and present, unbothered by the chaos that erupts around me.
However, the past year and a half felt more like being caught in a relentless storm than basking in my tranquil sanctuary. My life was a rollercoaster of emotions and uncertainties, with changes that left me feeling more anxious and frustrated than peaceful.
Both my professional and personal life were affected, and I'm sure many of you reading this might have sailed through similar turbulent waters (though I really hope not). It was a draining experience that veered me away from the grounded and mindful life I was trying to reach.
A few weeks ago, I decided it was time to reclaim my peace. I dedicated a weekend to pen down my thoughts, aspirations, and what genuinely made me happy. Funnily enough, this ‘exercise’ turned out to be a self-reflective questionnaire, with three open-ended questions at its core:
What does a perfect day look like to me?
What are my work-related goals?
What personal goals am I looking forward to?
A Perfect Day
In answering the first question, I didn’t fantasize about an unrealistic scenario where every day is a holiday with endless leisure time. While that sounds idyllic, reality has its demands. Instead, I painted a picture of a balanced day, weaving in small changes like waking up 15 minutes earlier or tweaking my workout routine. It was about envisioning a day that romanced reality, not defied it.
Goals Galore
Reflecting on my professional and personal goals helped me align my daily actions with what I wanted to achieve. This exercise wasn’t about creating a far-fetched narrative where I am suddenly earning a six-figure salary or mastering mindfulness in a beat. It was about setting achievable targets and working towards them with a pragmatic approach.
Starting Small
The essence of this exercise was to understand that improving life doesn’t always require drastic changes. Popular culture often glorifies radical transformations, overlooking the power of small, consistent steps. I chose to start small, altering just a couple of things in my routine, focusing on one realistic change at a time in my work or personal life.
The journey of introducing minor changes, forming new habits, and gradually expanding my comfort zone is what truly set me on a path of finding peace and calmness. It wasn't about a dramatic overhaul but about evolving 10% to 20% at a time, being present for each step towards a better, calmer version of myself.
Perhaps, answering these questions in the same manner might spark a ray of hope in your journey too. If this process helps even a single soul catch a glimpse of light amidst the dark clouds of confusion, I’d consider this a win.
After all, sharing the quest for peace and the joy of finding it, one small step at a time, is what propels me to write and connect with you all.
