‘Love on the Brain' - Book Review

Published a couple of days (weeks?) ago, Love on the Brain is the second book by Ali Hazelwood that I’ve read. (my personal favourite is still The Love Hypothesis)

From there one, I think we all know how it works, you spend a little too much time with someone you don’t like, and suddenly you realize this person is kind of cool, you get yourself in a situation(s) where you look like the ‘damsel in distress, and they save your ass, repeatedly, and then…. VUALA! You’re in love, and then you realize he was in love with you for as long as he knew you, so it kind of makes sense, right?

The 21st-century Twitter version of the “You Got Mail” element of the book was cute, I enjoyed that one a lot.

But… for some reason, I felt like the characters, or at least Levi’s was missing some depth. Also, I really liked Bee’s background (international family travelers and everything). Still, in my opinion, it could have further developed, maybe with a couple of throwback chapters exploring some past traumatic experiences and abandonment issues, that can help us relate to her pain and understand when she initially says “no” to Levi.

Main characters aside, I really liked Rocio, Bee’s assistant, who is probably one of the most interesting secondary book characters I’ve encountered. Sarcastic, dark, gloomy, and murderous in all the cool ways, I believe she deserves a separate book where she gets to explore her love for La Llorona and all things blood.

In conclusion, it was an interesting read, relaxing, and even a bit dreamy, because how doesn’t want to meet a man who’d withhold himself from intimate relationships because he’s in love with this perfect girl, though they haven’t really spoken in years. But hey, that’s why I read fiction.

I recommend reading this book in a vacation setting, like the beach, mountain, or a long lazy weekend at home, when you need to unload and forget about everything happening in the real world, and just read something nice.
