Reminder: Your Dreams Are Not Crazy

How often do we let ourselves believe in the dreams we have? More often than not, we leave reality to swipe us into our usual routines without any force, and we abandon our dreams in the back of our minds, where they will flicker silently, never actually manifesting into the real world.

Our dreams will never come true if we don't put the effort, or as my father likes to say, the work.

I was talking to my cousin the other day, and she told me, "You know, I have been talking to so many people recently about a dream I have, and everyone keeps saying I am crazy" that piqued my interest. I asked her what her dream was, and her eyes lit up when she explained to me, "I want to become a tennis coach".

You see, the people around her considered her dream "crazy" because even though she played tennis when she was little, she was never a pro in the sense of playing competitively or participating in tournaments. Despite that, she aspired to play tennis and wanted to teach others how to play too. I see nothing wrong with her dream, and I certainly didn't think it was crazy. I made sure to tell her that.

She had a plan, and most importantly, she had a timeline! She knew exactly how much time she wanted to spend bettering herself in the next five years to become good enough to coach.

Not only did she had a plan, but she was working towards it for the past five months, or so.

I was so inspired.

That conversation with her brought so much hope and optimism in me that day. It made me realise that I myself had dreams I thought "crazy" because of how the socially accepted/appropriate way was not fitting my particular situation.

I started wondering why I am supportive of other people's "crazy dreams" but never express the same support for myself. I am sure many people share my experience.

Maybe it's the feeling of failure that stops us. Maybe we don’t think we have what it takes. Or maybe we feel so good in our comfort zone that doing something to push us out of it is like jumping into cold water when you have a perfectly good hot tub next to you.

But you know what? If you jump into the cold water enough times, it start to feel warm.

I decided to jump. I decided to make a plan and work towards a dream I have.

I don't know if it will come true, but I know that the neurons in my brain are so fired up now, thanks to that dream. It's no longer slowly flickering in the corner of my mind; it's front and central, ready to counter the world.

What is your dream?
